Our Board
Mary Craig OBE
Convenor
Mary is the Chief Executive of Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland, an independent Funder with a commitment to forging strong relationships with voluntary organisations throughout Scotland.
Mary worked in the Trustees Savings Bank (TSB) from 1969 to 1997. A member of the Council of the Institute of Bankers in Scotland, Mary sat on the Education Committee and became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland in 1997.
Mary left the Bank in 1997 to join the Foundation in an assessment role working directly with charities and was appointed Deputy Chief Executive in July 2000. She became Chief Executive in January 2009. Over the years Mary has been involved with many charities, and has a leading role in working with Scotland’s other charitable funders. In 2010 she became Convenor of the Scotland Funders Forum.
In the 2010 New Year's Honours List Mary was awarded an OBE for services to the Voluntary Sector.
Patrick Boase
| Patrick Boase chairs Parent Network Scotland, a small charity providing courses for parents, mainly in disadvantaged areas across Scotland. He is a Director of CBS Network which works with small development organisations overseas (mainly India) while promoting social accounting and audit in Scotland. He practices intermittently as a trainer and auditor for Social Audit Network UK. He was the founder and for 12 years, chair of the Network for Social Change, a “funding collective” whose members seek out and fund charitable and campaigning projects. |
Katie Campbell
Katie is Head of Finance at The Robertson Trust where she has worked since 2006. As a qualified CA (ICAS member since 1995) she has a strong governance and financial background with broad experience in plc and charity reporting. Katie says
"I am very committed to lending all support possible to the Scottish charitable sector. I believe it plays a vital and integral part of Scotland’s past, present and future as a nation. Evaluation is a key part in this support process to ensure that results are visible through correct measurement and accurate reporting. By demonstrating measurable results, charities’ ability to influence central policy makers can only be strengthened."
Emma Crawshaw

Emma Crawshaw works with Fast Forward. She was previously the Manager of the YWCA Roundabout Centre in Edinburgh and has served on the ELREC Board of Directors. “I see taking on the responsibility of Trustee for ESS as an exciting opportunity to bring about positive change for disadvantaged people in Scotland by equipping voluntary organisations and project staff to capture the impact of and better promote and publicise their work challenging inequality and injustice.” |
Dr Sam Gardner
Sam Gardner is the Climate Change Policy Officer for the World Wildlife Fund in Scotland. He has previously worked for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and RSPB Scotland. He has also been Convenor of the Scottish Environment LINK Biodiversity Task Force, a member of the Sustainable Scotland Task Force and a member of the Evaluation Sub-group of the LINK Board. He spent two years on the selection panel for theBiodiversity Action Grants scheme – a funding programme. Sam completed his PhD in 2004 which involved evaluating the effectiveness of public participation.
Kirsten Hogg
| Kirsten works for Camphill Scotland as Facilitator. She was previously Policy and Development Manager at Community Care Providers Scotland, the association for voluntary organisations providing care and support services. She worked with the Social Work Inspection Agency on their self-evaluation guide for trustees of social care voluntary organisations. As part of a MSc in Public Policy, she completed a module on different types of evaluation and their role in the policy process She has been a volunteer grants assessor for the Scottish Community Foundation. |
Dr Anita Morrison
Anita is Head of Commonwealth Games Analytical Unit at the Scottish Government. She has a long standing interest in evaluation as both a practitioner and commissioner. She has worked in the Scottish Government since 2001 and has accumulated experience as a commissioner of evaluation in public health and civil justice. Between 2001 and 2003 she worked in the Effective Interventions Unit which aimed to provide up to date evidence on the effectiveness of drug and alcohol interventions to DATs and ADATs. At that time she co-authored a number of ‘Evaluation Guides’ (which are on the ESS website!), and commissioned support to local partnerships to self- evaluate. Before joining the Scottish Government she spent 2 years at Greater Glasgow Health Board evaluating local drug, alcohol and sexual health services and also spent 3 years working at the Paediatric Epidemiology and Community Health (PEACH) Unit at Glasgow University undertaking a EC commissioned project on childhood mortality and completing a PhD.
Barbara O’Donnell
Barbara O’Donnell is Director of Services for Alcohol Focus Scotland (AFS). ‘My interest in evaluation and monitoring has grown over the past decade and this is why I am interested in the work of Evaluation Support Scotland. It is important that voluntary organisation and funders measure the impact of their work which in turn improves the delivery of services.’ |
Robin Sinclair
| Robin Sinclair is Treasurer of ESS and is a chartered accountant in public practice. He has a background in audit and part of his role with ESS is audit liaison. Other areas of focus with ESS are financial planning and general governance issues.
Robin has previously volunteered with Planning Aid Scotland, where his involvement in fundraising required him to articulate outcomes in funding applications. This gave Robin an insight into the importance of charities being able to measure the impact of their work; ESS' principal focus is on helping Scottish charities to achieve this. |
Keith Wimbles
| Keith Wimbles is Chief Executive of the Voluntary Action Fund, an independent grant making trust. Previously Head of Development in Glasgow Council for the Voluntary Sector (GCVS), Keith has also worked as Programme Manager in SCVO with responsibility for the SCVO European Unit, small grants programmes, Equal Development Partnership and several programmes building the capacity of the voluntary sector and social economy. He is a member of the Scottish Community Foundation Fair Share Scotland Panel. Keith is enthusiastic about how effective evaluation can demonstrate the added value that the voluntary sector brings to public service delivery and believes that it is essential that the sector develop skills and competence in this area. |
