Board
Fraser Falconer
Convenor
Fraser is head of the BBC Children in Need Appeal in Scotland, and evaluation and monitoring is a vital component of his daily work.
'I'm involved with ESS because I think it could make a significant contribution to improving the service to children and young people in Scotland. This will inevitably come from better understanding and expectations between those delivering services and those providing the funds. All round, it will be a win-win.'
Jayne Scott
Treasurer
Jayne is the Chief Executive of Safe Space - a voluntary organisation which provides a range of support services for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Up until she took up this post her main involvement had been in an adult educational context. Evaluation processes from different perspectives are of great interest to her. She joined the Board in May 2005.
'What a great opportunity to get involved in a cutting-edge organisation which take evaluative processes and learning so seriously - and what a sense of achievement all round there will be when, together as funders, voluntary organisations, and ESS we can say we have made evaluation more meaningful for us all.'
Linda McKie
Professor Linda McKie is Research Professor of Sociology at Glasgow Caledonian University, Visiting Professional Fellow at the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration, Helsinki and Associate Director of the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships, Scotland. As a trustee in ESS she has lead responsibility for finance and organisational matters alongside fellow trustee Martin Crewe.
'I have been involved in the development of Evaluation Support Scotland from its earliest stages, drawing upon experiences as an evaluator, and participant in evaluations, to campaigning for a deeper appreciation and enhanced support for evaluation work.'
Martin Crewe
Martin is Director of Barnardo's Scotland and has over 20 years' experience in the voluntary sector. He is on the Board of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) and an acredited assessor with Quality Scotland in the use of the EFQM Excellence Model.

John Arthur
Director of Crew 2000 (Scotland), John has spent the last 17 years as a community activist and worker in the not-for-profit sector. Having worked in environmental education programmes, through support working to community development work he says he has 'gravitated towards working in drugs education, advice and support.'
'I have been fortunate in that most organisations I have worked with in the sector placed a very high value on evaluation: Crew 2000, Edinburgh Youth Social Inclusion Partnership and Streetwork UK to name but three. I become involved in the steering group of ESS and am a strong advocate for evaluation as the principal tool for learning and organisational development, all with the aim of creating better services for clients.'
Marion Lacey
Marion was the Research Manager with SCVO, and through provision and advice on research aims to promote within the sector best practice in terms of participatory approaches to project monitoring and evaluation. She now works as an independent research consultant.
'I am aware of the range of experience within the voluntary sector in terms of monitoring and evaluation, and the need for a more joined up approach by funders. I welcome the establishment of ESS which will we hope provide the catalyst in Scotland for the process of review and learning gained from evaluation to become something that benefits funders, those funded, and most importantly the beneficiaries of services.'
Nicola Richards
Nicola Richards has a long standing commitment to evaluation and was delighted to join the first board of ESS. After completing a Ph.D and working in academia, Nicola joined the Scottish Executive. She helped set up the Effective Interventions Unit and developed innovative approaches to bridge the gaps between evidence, policy and practice. Nicola is now Chief Executive of Columba 1400.
'Whilst running the Partnership Drugs Initiative for Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland, I become involved in the early thinking around an evaluation support service for the voluntary sector. This developed into the Steering Group that finally gave birth to ESS.'
