John Arthur

John ArthurDirector of Crew 2000 (Scotland), John Arthur has spent the last 17 years as a community activist and worker in the not-for-profit sector. Having worked in environmental education programmes, through support working to community development work he says he has 'gravitated towards working in drugs education, advice and support.'

'I have been fortunate in that most organisations I have worked with in the sector placed a very high value on evaluation: Crew 2000, Edinburgh Youth Social Inclusion Partnership and Streetwork UK to name but three. I become involved in the steering group of ESS and am a strong advocate for evaluation as the principal tool for learning and organisational development, all with the aim of creating better services for clients.'

Patrick Boase

Patrick Boase Patrick Boase chairs Parent Network Scotland, a small charity providing courses for parents, mainly in disadvantaged areas across Scotland.  He is a Director of CBS Network which works with small development organisations overseas (mainly India) while promoting social accounting and audit in Scotland. He practices intermittently as a trainer and auditor for Social Audit Network UK. He was the founder and for 12 years, chair of the Network for Social Change, a “funding collective” whose members seek out and fund charitable and campaigning projects.

 

Emma Crawshaw

Emma Crawshaw works with Fast Forward. She was previously the Manager of the YWCA Roundabout Centre in Edinburgh and has served on the ELREC Board of Directors. 

“I see taking on the responsibility of Trustee for ESS as an exciting opportunity to bring about positive change for disadvantaged people in Scotland by equipping voluntary organisations and project staff to capture the impact of and better promote and publicise their work challenging inequality and injustice.”

 

 

Fraser Falconer

Fraser Falconer

Fraser Falconer is head of the BBC Children in Need Appeal in Scotland, and evaluation and monitoring is a vital component of his daily work.

'I'm involved with ESS because I think it could make a significant contribution to improving the service to children and young people in Scotland. This will inevitably come from better understanding and expectations between those delivering services and those providing the funds. All round, it will be a win-win.'

 

Sam Gardner

Sam Gardner photoSam Gardner is the Climate Change Policy Officer for the World Wildlife Fund in Scotland. He has previously worked for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and RSPB Scotland. He has also been Convenor of the Scottish Environment LINK Biodiversity Task Force, a member of the Sustainable Scotland Task Force and a member of the Evaluation Sub-group of the LINK Board. He spent two years on the selection panel for theBiodiversity Action Grants scheme – a funding programme. Sam completed his PhD in 2004 which involved evaluating the effectiveness of public participation.

Kirsten Gooday

Kirsten Gooday Kirsten Gooday is Policy and Development Manager at Community Care Providers Scotland, the association for voluntary organisations providing care and support services. She worked with the Social Work Inspection Agency on their self-evaluation guide for trustees of social care voluntary organisations. As part of a MSc in Public Policy, she completed a module on different types of evaluation and their role in the policy process She has been a volunteer grants assessor for the Scottish Community Foundation.

 

Linda McKie

Linda MckieProfessor Linda McKie is Research Professor of Sociology at Glasgow Caledonian University, Visiting Professional Fellow at the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration, Helsinki and Associate Director of the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships, Scotland.
'I have been involved in the development of Evaluation Support Scotland from its earliest stages, drawing upon experiences as an evaluator, and participant in evaluations, to campaigning for a deeper appreciation and enhanced support for evaluation work.'

Barbara O’Donnell

 

Barbara O'Donnell

Barbara O’Donnell is Director of Services for Alcohol Focus Scotland (AFS).

‘My interest in evaluation and monitoring has grown over the past decade and this is why I am interested in the work of Evaluation Support Scotland. It is important that voluntary organisation and funders measure the impact of their work which in turn improves the delivery of services.’

 

Nicola Richards

Nicola RichardsNicola Richards has a long standing commitment to evaluation and was delighted to join the first board of ESS. After completing a Ph.D and working in academia, Nicola joined the Scottish Executive. She helped set up the Effective Interventions Unit and developed innovative approaches to bridge the gaps between evidence, policy and practice. Nicola has worked as Chief Executive of Columba 1400 and is now private secretary to the Permanent Secretary at the Scottish Government.

'Whilst running the Partnership Drugs Initiative for Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland, I become involved in the early thinking around an evaluation support service for the voluntary sector. This developed into the Steering Group that finally gave birth to ESS.'

 

Robin Sinclair

 

photo of Robin Sinclair Robin Sinclair is a chartered accountant in public practice. He has volunteered with Planning Aid Scotland, where his involvement in fundraising required him to articulate outcomes in funding application

 

Keith Wimbles

Keith Wimbles is Chief Executive of the Voluntary Action Fund, an independent grant making trust. Previously Head of Development in Glasgow Council for the Voluntary Sector (GCVS), Keith has also worked as Programme Manager in SCVO with responsibility for the SCVO European Unit, small grants programmes, Equal Development Partnership and several programmes building the capacity of the voluntary sector and social economy. He is a member of the Scottish Community Foundation Fair Share Scotland Panel. Keith is enthusiastic about how effective evaluation can demonstrate the added value that the voluntary sector brings to public service delivery and believes that it is essential that the sector develop skills and competence in this area. photo of Keith Wimbles
